To Lance Corporal Michael Harres by John Shinn

While in Iraq, Harres was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. Harres was featured in the July 1, 2005 edition
of Marine Corps News. Harres and his company participated in Operation Khanjar, the Arabic word for 'dagger'.
During this dangerous five-day mission, Harres, Iraqi soldiers, and hundreds of Marines scoured 100 square
kilometers of desert fields and shorelines bordering Thar Thar Lake searching for buried weapons and explosive
materials. Harres was quoted as saying, "I joined the Marines to make a difference. To be able to say that I did
something. I had the opportunity to go to college, but I wanted to feel that I had earned the right first. I wanted to
be able to say that I was out there, in the fight, on the front lines." Hanes returned from his first deployment to
Iraq in September 2005.
In September 2006, Harres and the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment deployed for their second tour of duty in Iraq. This time, Harres was sent to Ramadi, Iraq. In the December 11, 2006 issue of Time, Ramadi was described as the most dangerous place in Iraq. While in Ramadi, Harres was promoted to Corporal. His tour of duty was extended an additional month in response to President George W. Bush's directive to increase America's level of troops in Iraq. Harres and the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment returned to Camp Lejeune in May 2007. Corporal Harres anticipates that he will have one addtional deployment to Iraq before his four year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps ends in June 2008.
