SAR Flag Commendation Certificate, May 11, 1011

On Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the VFW in Crystal River Florida, I attended a Welcome Home Celebration for one of our Citrus County returning veterans, a Navy Seal returning from Afghanistan. (Michael Downey).

As the festivities for the returning veteran were winding down, I went up to the podium, took off my Submarine Veteran's Vest & associated fore and aft hat, put on my SAR Revolutionary War era Tricor Hat and picked up the microphone.  I proceeded to explain the significance of my hat change and announced that I was going to present Linda Downey (Michael's mom) with a SAR Flag Commendation Certificate.  I then called her to the podium and proceeded to read the citation from the certificate.  The woman was obviously quite moved by the unexpected turn of events.
And now for the rest of the story - - -
Linda Downey was the business woman that got into trouble last week with the city of Crystal River for flying too many flags in violation of a city ordinance that only permitted three flags.  She was flying the US Flag, the MIA Flag, and the flags of our military services. (Navy, Air Force, Army, Marines, Coast Guard) on the roof-line of her small business establishment, a small sandwich shop on a side street in Crystal River.  This woman is a single mom with two sons on active duty, both of which are Navy Seals.
After she was cited for the violation, the veterans of Citrus County found out about it and went absolutely nuts.  The story even made the national news where she was interviewed by Fox News at her place of business.
The local veterans went in force and just about mobbed the regularly scheduled council meeting earlier this week.  The city council agreed that the statute was improperly applied and probably worded poorly for its intended purpose.  They directed that the statute not be enforced until such time as it can be properly reworded (or perhaps even deleted).
Needless to say, my presentation was very well received by all those present.

Jack Townsend

Flag Award given to West Citrus Elks Exalted Ruler Jean Ortt on 5/3/2010

May 2009. Jim Glasaco and Jack Townsend recently presented a flag certificate to Nick Nicholas (of Nick Nicholas Ford in Inverness). Nick proudly flies the biggest flag in Inverness from a very high flag pole in front of his business. He is very supportive of veterans and veterans organizations. He also supports the SAR by providing convertibles for our use during the Veterans Day Parade.

May 2009. Ron & Joyce Hesketh are jointly the managers of Walden Woods. Ron, shown here accepting the Flag certificate from John Tucker, is a Veteran of Vietnam and he makes sure the Flag is being flown correctly.

May 2009. Lea Ann Plain, Property Manager for Weeki Wachee North, was honored to accept the SAR Flag Award from John Tucker. There are a lot of patriotic seniors living in the park and they keep her on her toes for ensuring the Flag is flown correctly.

April 10, 2009 Mr. and Mrs. Corbidge of Timber Pines, Spring Hill FL were delighted to receive their Sons of The American Revolution ?Flag Certificate? from the local Withlacoochee Chapter.
